Message of the Month – December 2014

It is that time of year again.  We all get busy visiting friends, buying gifts, baking cookies, writing cards, the list seems to be endless.  For many of us, by the time we get to the holidays we are exhausted, running on fumes bolstered by sugar from homemade goodies, Bing Crosby’s satin voice and lights that make us smile.  It’s all very lovely, the key is to find where the meaning sits for you.  This Christmas I invite you to reflect on the following…where there is meaning, there lies the true Christmas Spirit.

A number of years ago I decided not to write Christmas cards, it just took too much time.  I had too many parties to make an appearance at and presents I had yet to buy.  I was running behind and feeling stressed.  Then I became sick.  Nothing serious, it was a flu like cold that I did not want to pass on to others so I stayed home.  I remember sitting on my sofa thinking of all the things I have to do, what do I want to do?  The answer was a surprise to me.  I saw a box of Christmas Cards sitting on my desk.  I made a mug of hot chocolate, put my favourite Christmas CD’s on the stereo and began writing cards to people I cared about that I hadn’t seen in a long time.  I soon realized the time I spent connecting with people who had made a difference in my life was far more important to me than the parties that I had to cancel out of.

Before you spend your time, energy and resources running around, please remember that you are the gift.  Your time and energy are precious.  If you are feeling exhausted I invite you to cut down the to-do list and feel into what is important to you.  Let your insides guide you.  You may discover that the things you thought were important to do are not so important, and that the things that you were about to decide not to do this year are the things that give the holidays meaning for you and those you love.

I wish you all a blessed holiday and a joy-filled 2015.
